1930s villa with Frank Lloyd Wright influences.

Horizontal lines, an open layout, abstract cubist shapes, and stained glass artworks with geometric designs. This is a brief summary that reflects the style of the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. This 1930s villa has been rebuilt by the current residents, inspired by Wright's work and with special attention to symmetry and a touch of Japanese architecture.

Surrounded by characteristic willow trees, it is not immediately clear what kind of house stands on the 3,950 m² plot when arriving at 's-Gravenweg. Once through the entrance gate, a striking 1930s villa emerges, which is three-quarters surrounded by windows. This allows residents to fully enjoy the surrounding garden from the inside. One notable feature is that the flat roof extends beyond the glass façade. Looking up at the entrance, you can see a classic execution of this concept with projecting roofs. The stained glass windows with a characteristic geometric design are also features reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright, an American architect known for his line work and symmetry.

Connection with the outdoors and an open layout
These characteristics immediately catch the eye in the hallway. Here, we also find the typical stained glass and accents of oak wood, a nod to Wright's love for nature. Through the glass double doors on the left side of the hallway, we enter the dining area. With space for a long table and a beautiful view of the garden, it is a delightful place to dine. Wright always ensured an open view towards the surrounding garden in his designs, and the current residents have carefully integrated this during the reconstruction. Wherever you stand in the house, it feels like the indoors seamlessly blends with the outdoors. In addition to the connection with the outdoors, Wright also valued openness in the layout, which is evident on the ground floor. Inspired by the American architect, the current residents opted for an open layout. By using "room dividers" such as a side fireplace or storage space, they have playfully created a loft-like setting. This way, it is clear what the seating area, TV corner, and workspace are: they are separated but still form a cohesive whole. Walking back to the hallway and choosing the glass doors on the right side, you enter the kitchen. It features cabinets with Siemens appliances against the wall, including a wine climate cabinet. Opposite is a kitchen island with a large countertop, a gas stove, and a bar, allowing the island to transform into a second dining table in no time.

Symmetrical second floor with en-suite bathrooms
We take the stairs to the first floor, turn 180 degrees, and take in the colorful stained glass once again. The door straight ahead provides access to the staircase leading to the second floor. Bedroom one is on the left side of the staircase, and bedroom two is on the right side. Symmetry is also clearly present on this floor. Both bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms with a bathtub, sink, toilet, and French doors leading to the rooftop terrace. One difference between the bedrooms is that one of them has sliding doors to the en-suite bathroom. On the second floor, there are two additional bedrooms, each with a sink. On one side of the landing, there is a shower, and on the other side, there is a toilet.

Park-like garden by the water
Look out the window from the second floor and enjoy the green surroundings. Even better, step into the garden and relax on one of the terraces that grace the property. At the back of the villa, there is a terrace that borders the water. Hop into a boat, cast a fishing line, and enjoy the tranquility. The large terrace on the east side of the villa is perfect for elaborate dinners on long summer evenings. Surrounded by trees, you can stay pleasantly cool on a summer day while enjoying complete privacy. If you make use of the swimming pool, you can refresh yourself in the pool house after a swim. This multifunctional space can be used as a fitness room, hobby room, or an office, depending on your preference. Does the park-like garden with its gently sloping terrain make you feel like playing golf? Then here's good news for golf enthusiasts: across the street is the Golf & Country Club Capelle aan den IJssel. Greenest city in the Netherlands
In addition to a golf course, other amenities such as a supermarket and the train station are within walking distance. The center of Capelle aan den IJssel is about a five-minute bike ride away. An interesting fact: the 's-Gravenweg area, together with the Schollebos, which was created in English landscape style around 1980, forms a green buffer between the neighborhoods of Schollevaar, Middelwatering, and Oostgaarde, known as the green heart of Capelle. In 2015, Capelle aan den IJssel was awarded the title of the Greenest City in the Netherlands. Although it is one of the densely populated areas in the country, the municipality makes efforts to preserve green areas, and it has been successful. All of this is located just a stone's throw away from Rotterdam.
